Packers attend pro day workout of supplemental draft WR Marcus Simms

The Green Bay Packers were one of several teams to attend the pro day workout of West Virginia receiver Marcus Simms, according to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst.

Simms (5-11, 188) is one of five players entered into the NFL’s supplemental draft, which will take place Wednesday, July 10.

According to Pauline, 16 teams saw Simms work out and run through positional drills in his home state of Maryland. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4-4.49 seconds, with a vertical jump of 36″, a broad jump of 10-2 and three-cone time of 6.91 seconds.

Simms caught 46 passes for 699 yards and two touchdowns during his junior season in 2018. He also returned 10 kicks and six punts. Over three years, Simms hauled in 87 passes for 1,457 yards and eight touchdowns and returned 41 kicks and 23 punts.

Simms’ skill set could be tempting to the Packers.

“He has two standout traits that NFL teams could covet, his downfield separation and electric ability with the ball in his hands,” Brad Kelly of The Draft Network wrote in his review of Simms.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic said Simms has “terrific play speed and foot quickness” but also a lack of “route discipline” that affects timing in the passing game.

The Packers didn’t draft a receiver in the 2019 draft and have several young options behind Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison, but Simms looks like a potential fit as a vertical threat in Matt LaFleur’s offense and a potential return option for special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga.

Kelly compared Simms to Kenny Stills and predicted at least one team will use a Day 3 pick to select the West Virginia playmaker in the supplemental draft. Brugler also compared Simms to Stills, calling him a “draftable player worthy of consideration in the mid-round range.”
