Packers add former Chargers DC Derrick Ansley as pass game coordinator

Jeff Hafley’s first defensive staff with the Green Bay Packers is nearly complete. According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley as the team’s new pass game coordinator, replacing Greg Williams.

Ansley, 42, was the defensive backs coach for two seasons (2021-2022) under head coach Brandon Staley before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2023. A former safety at Troy, Ansley has been a defensive backs coach at seven different stops in college and the NFL. He got his FBS start as a grad assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama.

Ansley did not call plays for the Chargers defense in 2023 until Staley was fired. Over the final three games called by Ansley, the Chargers gave up only 17.7 points per game.

As defensive backs coach, he helped Derwin James become a Pro Bowl in 2021 and 2022.

The Chargers ranked 21st in points allowed in 2023.

The New York Giants interviewed Ansley for their open defensive coordinator position earlier this year.

The Packers kept Jason Rebrovich, who will be the new defensive line coach in a 4-3 front, and defensive backs Jason Downard. New additions to Hafley’s staff include Ansley, assistant defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase and linebackers coach/run game coordinator Anthony Campanile.
