Package holiday prices could double when lockdown ends

The cost of package holidays could be set to soar when lockdown ends, according to industry experts.

Prices could double, rising to as much as £1,000-a-head in order for airlines and hotels to manage social distancing.

The cost of holidays will also increase because of rises in travel insurance and a drop-off in business travel.

Rises in travel insurance and a drop in business travel could also see holiday costs rise.

Martyn James, of consumer website Resolver, told The Mirror : “It’s likely the cost of overseas package deals will double. Even when they [customers] get to their hotel, there will be no buffet and all kinds of limitations around the pool.”

Aviation expert Matt Purton said if airlines have to block middle seats for safety, consumers could expect to see a 30% price rise.

Low-cost airlines could also face further hits if businesses opt for online conference calls rather than face-to-face meetings around the globe.

Paul Charles, of The PC Agency travel consultancy explained that "airlines will have to make more money from their economy passengers", meaning holiday prices will rise.

Coronavirus will also mean hotels having to increase their cleaning budgets, while insurance premiums could rocket by 20%.

Ryanair and British Airways are aiming to relaunch their flights in July.

All TUI and First Choice holidays have been cancelled until at least June 11.

Although Italy has said there will be no quarantine rules for UK travellers, Spain has put quarantine measures in place.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson has said UK citizens arriving back in Britain will face 14 days of quarantine.
