SHIZUOKA -- A paper package jointly developed by Shizuoka Prefecture Greenhouse Agricultural Cooperative's Crown Melon Branch and others with the aim of making "a gift box suitable for a first-rate melon presented to a royal Arab family" received a Japan Package Contest 2020 award in the gift packaging category.
Officials related to the package's development visited the Shizuoka Prefecture's city office in Fukuroi, where the branch is located, on Wednesday and reported the win to Mayor Hideyuki Harada.
The black box has a gold pattern on the surface. Inside is a golden ichimatsu checkered pattern, and the melon is placed on a dark red cloth. The melon can be appreciated in the box until it ripens.
A person in charge of the design at a packaging material company said: "I tried to make the box look luxurious when opened. I want people to get a sense of Japan from the ichimatsu checkered pattern."
According to the branch, the package will be used for exports to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. It is said that melons in such packaging are sold at about three times the price of those in Japan.
