Pack of rats pictured running around Forthquarter Park in Edinburgh

A large pack of rats has been pictured at an Edinburgh park, leading to calls for it to be cleaned up.

The rodents were spotted in broad daylight on the walkway around Forthquarter Park on Thursday.

When the picture was shared on a local community Facebook page some said the rats should be removed, while others said they are harmless and should be left alone.

The post on the Muirhouse and West Pilton page attracted hundreds of comments. Signs around the park warn people not to feed the ducks bread in case it helps the rat population.

One said: "The place is a disgrace it’s all over grown with plenty rubbish in the bushes the pond need a good clean up."

Another said: "I've seen people feeding the ducks right beside the notice encouraging people NOT TO feed the ducks because of the rats!"

Someone else said: "That's shocking council need to get some traps set to get these but I bet there will be thousands."

However others said the animals should not be harmed.

One person commented: "A wild rat in a park is not going to come anywhere near your dog or kids. They are a prey animal, not a predator.

"Leave them be. Their home was ruined the moment people built houses there."

Another said: "Rats will be everywhere you can't stop them its natures little beauty."
