Pacific tsunami: Tonga undersea volcano sends shockwaves that register as 'jolts' in Ireland

Pressure waves from the eruption of the underwater volcano off Tonga on Saturday were so violent that they registered with the Irish meteorological service Met Éireann, monitors in the Dublin headquarters said at 5:30 this morning.

In a post on social media, the weather station published images of graphs registering the shockwaves that went around the world following the eruption of the submerged volcano off tonga. They said: "Pressure waves emanating from the eruption site travelled around the world. Yesterday evening Irish stations recorded a jolt in the pressure readings associated with this wave."

The graphs were recorded at stations situated in Mullingar, about 50 miles west of Dublin, and Valentia island, on the south west coast.

In a later post on Twitter, observers said: "We can observe a second wave around 2am this morning associated with #TongaVolcano."

The Pacific island of Tonga itself suffered significant damage after a tsunami triggered by the eruption made landfall, according to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Humanitarian groups said they were are struggling to establish communications with the island nation as both telephone and internet connections had been affected.

Footage on social media showed waves crashing into coastal homes. The eruption was so intense it was heard as "loud thunder sounds" in Fiji – more than 500 miles away, officials said, with shockwaves being registered much farter afield.

It was reported that tsunami waves up to 4ft high had reached the California coast.
