As Pacific sandlance season begins for other towns and Suttu, a coastal town of Hokkaido facing the Sea of Japan, lights from the fishing boats make the dark waters appear emerald green. Every night, about 30 fishing ships will go out into Suttu Bay and net the fish who were lured by the lights. This season, the number of fish they catch changes from day to day.
"The catch isn't bad, considering we just started. It probably won't be as good as last year, but we're still hoping [for a good haul]," a representative for the Suttu fishing association said.
The season is expected to continue until the end of the month. The Pacific sandlance that are caught will be processed into tsukudani, a simmered dish, which is a local specialty.
