A TRUCK fire on the Pacific Highway has put the brakes on traffic between Newcastle and Raymond Terrace.

The blaze occurred near the Tomago Road intersection, with Live Traffic NSW warning congestion is developing through the area shortly before 11.30am.

Authorities have closed the road in a northbound direction, Live Traffic reports.

Drivers have been urged to reduce speed and exercise caution as they pass, or to use an alternative route if possible.

Light vehicles are advised to divert along Tomago and Old Punt Roads to rejoin the highway, while trucks and other heavy vehicles should use Tomago Road and then Masonite Road.

Emergency services are on the scene.
