Pablo Mari drops Instagram hint over Mikel Arteta's Arsenal team selection vs Villarreal

Pablo Mari may have dropped a big hint about starting Arsenal's Europa League semi-final second leg against Villarreal.

The Gunners defender struggled in the first leg last week and was rested for last Sunday's 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League as Gabriel Magalhaes was partnered by David Luiz at St James' Park.

Defeat for Arsenal or failure to beat Unai Emery's side will almost certainly result in no European football for the club next season.

That would be the first time such a feat has happened in more than 20 years and ensuring the Gunners' proud record of being in Europe in every season since 1995/96 is the challenge that awaits Mikel Arteta's squad.

"Well, I think it gives you the platform, visually first, as you mentioned, and then because it’s related to our history and the demands that this club has got," Arteta said in his pre-match press conference.

"Then because obviously financially the way to attract sponsors, to attract players, to improve your squad and to compete for the big trophies you have to be in Europe.

"That’s the challenge we’ve got ahead of us."

Arteta's comments would suggest that it is time to play his strongest team for Arsenal biggest game of the season so far, but does that mean a start for Pablo Mari?

Well, if his social media activity is anything to go by, the centre-back looks set to feature.

As seen in the image below, taking to Instagram, Pabl Mari has done his best to hype up the big game in north London which could suggest he will be restored to the Arsenal backline.

The likes of Nicolas Pepe and Thomas Partey have done similar whenever they've been included in an Arsenal starting XI this season.

And they too are in contention to start this evening.

Whilst the Gunners go into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Newcastle, it's now five games across all competitions since they last won at home and that record must not extend to six if they're to reach the Europa League final.

Should Pablo Mari earn an immediate recall, he could play a key role in setting up an all-English final against Manchester United - who are 6-2 up against Roma from their first-leg - later this month.

Following a 2-1 draw in Spain last week, a 1-0 win at the Emirates Stadium will be enough to book Arsenal's spot in another Europa League final by virtue of the away goals rule.

With Mari in the team, the Gunners have kept just one clean sheet in the Europa League, but one more would be worth its weight in gold.
