The chief executive of PA Media, the national news agency, is to become the chairman of NLA Media Access, the organisation that licenses out newspaper and magazine content.
Clive Marshall will join the NLA board and takes over as chairman today.
He takes over from Brian McCarthy who will retire after eight years on the NLA board, including as interim chairman for the past 12 months.
Marshall is known for having diversified the PA into new areas beyond traditional media, and for dropping its old name, the Press Association. "We are not the Press... And we are not an association," he remarked as he culled the 150-year-old brand.
Under his auspices, PA has shifted from only largely serving its traditional newspaper subscribers to providing news content to clients from transport to betting firms and charities.
NLA managing director Henry Jones said of Marshall's appointment: "His knowledge of the industry, digital focus and track record will be of huge benefit to NLA at such an important time for the business."
Marshall has consolidated under the PA umbrella the Alamy stock pictures business and media technology firms EBS, Globelynx and StreamAMG.
He was previously chief executive of the Australian Associated Press and has held previous senior posts at Reed Elsevier and Trinity Newspapers.
