P&O Cruises has reinforced its dress code rules across its entire fleet and made clear that passengers who turn up in banned clothing could be refused boarding at Southampton before they ever step foot on a ship.
Travel and Tour World reported that the cruise line published updated guidance through its official passenger information channels setting out exactly what travellers can and cannot wear in shared spaces on board. The rules apply to ships including Arvia, Iona, Britannia and Ventura which all depart regularly from Southampton, one of the busiest cruise terminals in Europe.
The most talked-about restriction covers transparent and see-through garments which are not permitted in guest areas. Clothing that carries offensive graphics, explicit language or inappropriate imagery is also banned across the fleet. Fancy dress and costume outfits are only allowed when the ship has specifically organised a themed event and even then passengers need to follow guidance on what is appropriate.
Swimwear is restricted to poolside areas. Guests cannot wear it inside restaurants, lounges, entertainment venues or reception spaces regardless of the time of day. P&O Cruises has been clear that these are not suggestions but part of the contractual conduct expectations passengers agree to when they book.
Evening dress codes remain a central part of the P&O Cruises experience and the line continues to run both Evening Casual and Black Tie nights. On casual evenings smart clothing suitable for an upscale setting is expected. On Black Tie nights passengers are encouraged to wear dinner jackets, formal suits, tuxedos or cocktail dresses. These evenings are particularly popular on larger ships like Arvia and Iona where gala dining events are built into the sailing programme.
Southampton handles a substantial volume of cruise passengers throughout the year and port authorities have increasingly focused on making embarkation as smooth as possible. Last-minute dress code issues at the terminal cause delays for everyone and P&O Cruises is urging passengers to read all pre-departure documentation carefully before they pack.
Passengers booked on upcoming sailings are advised to plan separate wardrobes for daytime use, poolside, shore excursions and formal evenings to cover the full range of settings they will encounter on board.
