Ozwald Boateng's Savile Row space to host pop-up exhibition exploring culture of hair braiding

Ozwald Boateng's Savile Row space will become home to a pop-up art project showcasing works by Malian photographer Youssouf Sogodogo.

Black Shade Projects, a pop-up exhibition programme focusing on championing work from across Africa and the diaspora, will showcase Sogodogo's series of photographs exploring the culture of hair braiding.

Entitled Crossroads, it brings together pictures from his ongoing series, Hairstyles of Mali (Les Tresses du Mali). The artist began documenting hairstyles in the 1980s. Designs from Boateng’s Africanism collection will be exhibited alongside the photographs.

The exhibition will take place at Boateng’s shop on Savile Row, curated by Enam Gbewonyo, founder of Black British Female Artist Collective.

Black Shade Projects founder Myriem Baadi said: “In realising Black Shade Project’s inaugural exhibition, it was imperative that we not only highlight a lesser-discussed talent – that of the brilliant Youssouf Sogodogo – but also redefine ways in which we interact with shared cultures.

“The decision to host Crossroads in collaboration with Boateng was deliberate, not only to highlight our shared concern with authentic histories and new narratives for Africa, but also to demonstrate that art can be powerfully enjoyed and displayed beyond the art world’s traditional setting.”

Black Shade Projects x Ozwald Boateng presents: Crossroads by Youssouf Sogodogo runs from September 27-October 18, blackshadeprojects.com
