Ozeki Takayasu pulls out of Autumn tourney

Ozeki Takayasu on Friday withdrew from the upcoming Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament due to a left elbow injury suffered during the previous Nagoya tournament in July, the Japan Sumo Association announced.

Takayasu suffered a torn ligament in the elbow at the Nagoya tournament and, having already secured a kachikoshi eighth win, withdrew on the 11th day. He did not participate in the summer regional tours or the official practice in front of the yokozuna deliberation council on Aug. 31.

Stablemaster Tagonoura said he did not expect Takayasu to enter midway during the Autumn tournament, which starts Sunday at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

As such, the ozeki will have "kadoban" status for the Kyushu tournament in November, meaning he will need a majority of wins to retain his rank.
