Asanoyama fought off a strong initial charge from No. 1 maegashira Endo before forcing him out in the first tournament to be attended by spectators since January.
Yokozuna Hakuho collected his second win in a quick bout, using an overarm throw to defeat winless No. 1 maegashira Yutakayama.
Meanwhile, ozeki Takakeisho, who is under kadoban status this basho and needs at least eight wins to keep his rank, earned his second win by slapping down No. 2 maegashira Onosho, who remained winless.
Earlier, yokozuna Kakuryu pulled out of the basho due to right elbow ligament damage.
