Ozark season 4 on Netflix confirmed with Jason Bateman returning - but with a big catch

Acclaimed crime drama Ozark will return for a fourth and final season on Netflix.

The streaming giant confirmed the news on social media today that the money-laundering drama which stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney will be back for more episodes after weeks of speculation.

Netflix tweeted today: "Ozark will return for a fourth and final season, split across two parts – each of 7 episodes."

This format for final seasons follows in the footsteps of other beloved crime shows, including the drug drama Breaking Bad which Ozark has often been compared to.

Similarly celebrated drama Mad Men also divided its final season in a similar fashion.

It is unknown how far apart these two halves shall be released.

Netflix did manage to approach the news of a final season with fans in a bit more of a positive light, however.

The streaming service's official Twitter account added: "Did the maths for you and it turns out that means there will be FOURTEEN more episodes!!"

Bateman and Linney will reprise their roles as Marty and Wendy Byrde, two Chicago residents who moved to the Ozarks to continue to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel.

Along the way, they have faced various threats, with the previous season ending with them more in bed with the cartel than ever before, with the final shot of season three showing them in a bloody embrace with drug kingpin Omar Navarro ( Felix Solis ).

Navarro had just summarily executed his lawyer Helen Pierce ( Janet McTeer ) in front of the pair after they began a feud with her.

Also expected to return for the fourth run are Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner as Charlotte and Jonah Byrde, respectively.

Fan-favourite and Emmy Award-winner Julia Garner will also return as the Bydres' former ally, Ruth Langmore, who ended the last season by leaving their employ.

Showrunner Chris Mundy has already teased what fans can expect from the fourth run and it seems that it will place Ruth front and centre to the story as the Byrdes grow closer to Navrarro.

Mundy told Entertainment Weekly: "Well, if we're lucky enough to get a season 4, I think it will be about whether or not Ruth really can create something of her own that she wants and is sustainable, or if she wants something else.

"And I think it will be about if the Byrdes can they turn the biggest mistake of their lives into this huge advantage, and how much will karma catch up with them if they do?"

Ozark season 4 does not currently have a release date.
