Ozan Tufan to Crystal Palace: £9m bid, why previous transfer failed, Fenerbahce's asking price

The January transfer window is upon us and Crystal Palace have already been linked with a number of stars that could strengthen them for the rest of the season, including Fenerbahce midfielder Ozan Tufan.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Selhurst Park before, and came close to joining the Eagles before a deal fell through.

Palace are generally well-stocked at the moment in terms of their squad, with Roy Hodgson stating recently that any incoming players would be dependent on players in the team leaving first.

With that in mind, we take a look below on the latest surrounding the Turkey international's future.

Roy Hodgson press conference after Sheffield United win

Why a move broke down

Tufan himself revealed that in 2018 he was close to a move to Crystal Palace, but an injury elsewhere in the squad forced Roy Hodgson's hand.

"Crystal Palace had showed a real interest in me a few years back and I nearly signed for them," he told Goal.

"We even had our plane tickets to England. But right before the day we planned to fly to England, Crystal Palace’s Sako got injured.

"The board had an emergency meeting and they decided to sign a replacement for him. So my move failed. They signed Alexander Sorloth instead of me. The details on this are not widely known but yes, it happened to us."

Fenerbahce's asking price

Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur stated in December that amid growing interest in Tufan, Fenerbahce management were open to a sale but hoping for a fee of around €20million (£18.1million).

That fee would likely be higher than Palace are willing to pay for the midfielder, though with his contract running until 2023, the Turkish side will be the driving seat when it comes to negotiations, especially if there is interest from other clubs - though how serious that interest is remains to be seen.

Palace 'reignite' interest

The latest reports from Sabah Sport in Turkey state that Palace came back in for Tufan in the summer transfer window, but could not complete a deal.

However, they have apparently come back in for the defensive midfielder with an offer of around €10million (£9million).

Palace are reportedly yet to receive a response about the offer, with Fenerbahce's management set for a meeting after their game against BB Erzurumspor on January 11th.

Hodgson's comments on transfers

Palace have a number of senior players who will be out of contract at the end of the season, and though Hodgson insists that talks are ongoing behind the scenes, there is some long-term instability, especially when considering the entire coaching team will be out of contract in the summer as well.

However, the manager says he is currently happy with his squad as is, and incoming players will depend on filling gaps vacated by current members of the squad.

"Our squad at the moment is a good one, I'm happy with it - it's a full squad as well," he told reporters. "There are no particular gaps that we could fill with players.

"If anything is going to happen, it would be on the basis I'm sure that some players leave us and therefore a gap is created where a new player could come in.

"If that moment arrives, I'm sure there will be a reason for us to sit down and talk about it. But there's no point at the moment in talking about those things, because any players coming in would just be adding to the 25 we already have.

"I trust [the players whose deals are running low]. I trust their professionalism, I trust their respect for the club and their respect for each other. I'm expecting them to carry on performing right to the end irrespective of their contract situation.

"Of course it is an element the club has to consider and is considering - a lot of discussions are going on behind the scenes with a lot of players."
