Oxgangs fire – Community raised 'repeated concerns' about danger of derelict building before blaze

Residents in Oxgangs had raised "repeated concerns" about a derelict building which went on fire this weekend, according to a councillor for the area.

Fire crews spent much of yesterday tackling a blaze at an address which has been empty for years on Oxgangs Farm Grove.

Three appliances rushed to the scene at around 2.40pm yesterday (Saturday) and remained there for hours battling the flames as shocked residents looked on.

Oxgangs councillor Scott Arthur has said he will be asking the City of Edinburgh Council what can be done to ensure the safety of the community after "repeated concerns" about the risk the property poses.

He told Edinburgh Live: "The local community have repeatedly raised concerns with me about the risk this derelict property poses to them and anyone entering it, but the council say they are powerless to act.

"On Saturday the worst fears of local residents have come true, with firefighters having to risk their lives to deal with fire in the property which may have been set deliberately.

"On Monday I will be asking the council what can be done to ensure the safety of the community and, in particular, I will be asking for compulsory purchase powers to be used."

Firefighters used two high-powered hose-reel jets and thermal imaging cameras to deal with the blaze and ensure the safety of everyone nearby after the fire broke out yesterday afternoon.

They spent hours tackling the blaze and remained on the scene last night to ensure that the fire hadn't spread.
