Oxgangs caravan explosion: Police probe suspicious fire as shocking photos show aftermath of blaze

Police say a fire which ripped through a caravan on a residential street in Edinburgh was started deliberately.

Emergency services were called to Firrhill Drive in Oxgangs at around 1am on Sunday following reports that a caravan had exploded.

The flames were put out by fire crews shortly after their arrival and nobody was injured, however a number of cars parked nearby were damaged.

Dramatic video footage shows the caravan ablaze in the early hours, as shocked residents look on.

Police now say that they are treating the incident as deliberate, and are following a line of enquiry.

A spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a fire at a caravan on Firrhill Drive in Edinburgh shortly after 1.10am on Sunday, 29 November.

"It was extinguished safely by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

"The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and officers are following a positive line of enquiry."

Some vehicles parked close to the caravan appear to have been badly damaged by the fire. One even looks as though part has been melted by the heat.

An eyewitness told Edinburgh Live: "There's a caravan that exploded just outside Firrhill Drive about 1am. Not sure what the circumstances are but fire services are on their way. Seems like nobody was hurt and just a few cars got damaged."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed that they were called at 1.07am, and their crews managed to put out the fire using three pumps.

They left the scene a short time later when the area was confirmed as safe.
