Oxford United snap up midfielder previously linked with Bristol City, Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers

Oxford United have secured the signing of Alex Rodriguez Gorrin.

The 25-year-old midfielder was linked with Bristol City earlier this summer after rejecting an offer of a new contract at Motherwell.

He made 24 appearances last season and averaged the highest interceptions per game across Europe, which saw him linked with the Robins along with other Championship clubs such as Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic.

Yet it is unclear how concrete the Robins' interest was, and the Spaniard quickly became linked with League One clubs Portsmouth and Ipswich Town.

Now the former Sunderland youth prospect has joined Oxford United after his impressive season at Motherwell.

Speaking about the deal, U's boss Karl Robinson said there was plenty of competition for Gorrin's signature.

He told the club website: "There was a fair amount of interest from a lot of clubs.

"That doesn’t surprise me because he was highly impressive last season and really caught the eye. He is a real competitor and a terrific athlete.

"He loves a challenge, is a good tackler and we think will be a very good player for us."
