Oxford United confirm transfer talks for Luke Garbutt but Everton could lose defender on free transfer

Oxford United are in talks with Everton to re-sign Luke Garbutt on loan after a successful spell last term.

United manager Karl Robinson, who started his youth career at Goodison Park and hails from Rainhill, is looking to revamp the left-side of his squad after a 12th-place finish last season.

Garbutt initially struggled at the Kassam Stadium before starting 10 of Oxford's final 14 League Two games of the campaign predominantly as a left-midfielder .

“We’re still speaking to Garbs and his parent club,” the U’s boss told the Oxford Mail . "We probably need another one or two on the left.

“We would be looking for a left-footed player, ideally we’ll bring Garbs back.”

Everton signed Garbutt from Leeds United in 2009 and despite breaking into the first-team under Roberto Martinez, he last featured for the Blues in 2015.

With one year remaining on his current deal, another loan would mean a free transfer would be likely at the end of next season.

Robinson, however, is confident of tying up a deal and told reporters: "I imagine we will have answers soon.”
