Oxford United boss Karl Robinson is handed a touchline ban following his red card at Sunderland

Oxford United boss Karl Robinson has been hit with a fine and a touchline ban after he was sent from the dugout as his side lost against Sunderland on Wearside last week.

Robinson's threw away a lead and were reduced to ten men on their way to a 3-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light on Good Friday.

And Robinson himself was sent to the stands ten minutes from time for abusing referee Trevor Kettle in the aftermath of Sunderland's second goal, which was scored by Aiden McGeady.

The FA charged Robinson with improper conduct, with the head coach admitting the offence.

He was fined £1,000 and must serve a one-match touchline ban, which means he must watch his side's game against Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road from the stands.

An FA statement said: "Robinson admitted that he used abusive and/or insulting language towards a match official during the 81st minute of the fixture and that his behaviour amounted to improper conduct."

Robinson was incensed because Sunderland's goal came when one of his players, Cameron Brannagan, was on the floor waiting for treatment.

After the game, Robinson said he had been sent off for calling Kettle a 'bleeping disgrace'.

And earlier this week Robinson said that next time Kettle refereed his side, he would watch from the stands voluntarily to 'disconnect myself from that situation'.

In the aftermath of the match, Robinson also claimed that his goalkeeper Jack Stevens had been headbutted by a Sunderland staff member in a half-time tunnel fracas and said that the police had been contacted.

But Northumbria Police said they had received no call in relation to the alleged incident.
