The festive season in London is officially under way after thousands crammed into Oxford Street to watch the Christmas lights switch on.

The capital’s busiest shopping street was lit up in array of dazzling colours at the event at 6pm on Tuesday evening.

Huge crowds huddled on pavements in warm clothing as the famous lights went on just as it started to rain.

But there was no celebrity hitting the button this year, as popstar Rita Ora had done in 2017.

Instead, Ray BLK, Kara Marni and Isaac Waddington performed a series of in-store musical shows throughout the evening.

Elsewhere, Mercury Prize nominee Novelist was due to take to the stage at JD Sports from 7.30-8pm.

A nine-piece brass band was also set to perform at John Lewis’ Skyline Skating with Sipsmith on the Roof from 7-8pm.
