Oxford Road shut in both directions after water leak causes 'major flooding'

Oxford Road is closed in both directions after a serious water leak caused flooding.

The road is shut between Grafton Street close to the university and Booth Street West.

Police described the flooding along Oxford Road as “major”.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police City Centre on Twitter shortly before 6am on Wednesday morning said: “Road Closed - Oxford Road is closed in both directions between Booth Street West and Grafton Street outside the University due to a serious water leak, causing major flooding on the road. Sgt K.”

An image accompanying the tweet showed a large build-up of surface water.

A tweet from Transport for greater Manchester added: “Oxford Road closed in both directions outside the University due to a burst water main.

“Local bus services @StagecoachGM, @gnwbus, @FirstManchester are on diversion.

“Allow extra time for your journey & please seek an alternative route.”
