Oxford Circus on lockdown as police investigate suspicious item

Oxford Circus was briefly on lockdown tonight as police investigated a suspicious item.

Oxford Circus station and roads around Oxford Street were closed at about 9pm.

The Met said in a tweet: "Road closures are in place around #OxfordStreet #OxfordCircus while police assess a suspicous [sic] item.

"Tube closures are also in place. Please avoid the area."

Transport for London (TfL) accounts also confirmed the station had been closed "following a request from the police".

But the item was later deemed non-suspicious and the incident stood down.

The Met tweeted: "The item in #OxfordCircus #OxfordStreet has been declared non-suspicious & the incident stood down. Road closures will be lifted & tubes re-opened. Thanks for your patience."

Journalist Olivia Lang had earlier told the Standard: "Police were shouting at people to get back. There were lots of flashing lights and sirens."

She added the street was cordoned off as "multiple police vehicles turned up."

Another witness had said: “The cordon keeps getting bigger and bigger and the police are moving us back.

“I’m not sure what’s happening but it looks like something at the station.”
