Sunderland crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Oxford United.
Rob Hall fired the hosts in front in an incisive counter-attacking move - seconds after Marc McNulty agonisingly hit the post.
The Black Cats striker levelled in the second half as the visitors grew in confidence in the fourth-round tie.
The match finished level, and the host maintained a perfect record from the spot while Will Grigg fired over and McNulty saw his effort saved.
