>> The annual buffalo race in Chon Buri is a colourful event offering rare insight into the local culture associated with the country's best known beast of burden. The main attractions include a parade of international costumes worn by buffaloes and a blessing rite. The competition also includes a segment focusing on the physical beauty of buffaloes organised to boost the animal's profile in and outside of the country.
The buffalo race was registered as a national cultural heritage event in the traditional sport category in 2012. The race is an example of living history dating back 146 years. It is designed to be a showcase of the distinctive culture of Chon Buri.
The one-of-a-kind event is put together with the intent to let buffaloes rest after the hard work of ploughing the rice fields. Before a rice harvest, locals gather around for a chat and exchange goods at the market. They bring along their buffaloes and before long, the farmers challenge one another to get their animals to race, which marks the beginning of the annual contest. The race is held one day before the end of Buddhist Lent.
