'Ownership would prefer' - Liverpool transfer claim made as midfield search continues

Liverpool's chances of bringing in a midfielder appear to be unlikely in this current transfer window after Jurgen Klopp admitted he "made a mistake" when opting not to sign an addition to the middle of the park earlier in the summer.

The owner of Liverpool, John W Henry, was at Anfield on Saturday to witness the Reds defeat Bournemouth in a record-equalling 9-0 win on Saturday afternoon, but it is unknown as to whether he will fund a move for a new player in the middle of the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp currently has Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain missing through injury as the midfield looks heavily depleted, leading to cries for reinforcements to be made before the window shuts on Thursday.

The Athletic's David Ornstein took to the Football Podcast to talk about Liverpool's chances of signing a midfielder: "Calls I’ve made around this have suggested that Liverpool will probably not bring somebody in unless there’s an exceptional opportunity which is very good value for money.

“Knowing Liverpool, we’ve seen this before with Diogo Jota - they might cause a bit of a surprise before the deadline. They’ve spent heavily on Darwin Nunez and it sounds like the ownership would prefer to not dip into the market.”

The club have spent big on Nunez already this summer, while also adding Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsey.

However, the club's recruitment was criticised in January 2020, when Liverpool had an injury crisis in defence similar to their current midfield plight and only added short-term options in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies.
