Owners warned after dog allegedly killed and others left ill in Dublin park due to unauthorised poison on ground at Deerpark

Pet owners have been left extremely worried after a dog is said to have died after coming in contact with unauthorised poison in a Dublin park on Tuesday.

A person was walking their dog in Deerpark in the Stillorgan area when the pet fell ill and is said to have subsequently died shortly after returning home.

Other dogs who were walking in the park at Mount Merrion at the time are said to have fallen seriously ill shortly after but no other deaths have been recorded.

Frequent pet walkers of this park have been told to stay away until the matter has been resolved.

One person, however, said that her mother had been walking their dog through the park yesterday and that "he seems ok" despite the reports.

A spokeswoman told Dublin Live: "We can confirm that the County Council staff have not laid any poison or treatments within the park grounds and we are taking these reports very seriously.

"The Council are investigating this matter and are currently checking the park grounds for any evidence of poison or other substances being dumped or placed within the park."

They concluded: "If we find any evidence of such this will be dealt with immediately."

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has been made aware of the dog poisoning in the area but have said that it was not planted by them.
