Owners of 'best wee cafe' in Glasgow's east end taking step back to semi-retire

The family who run 'the best wee cafe' in the east end of Glasgow have announced they are taking a step back from running the business to semi-retire.

Those at the helm of Pelican Cafe on Shettleston Road, who have run the cafe since 1993 - five years after other family members opened it in 1988 - confirmed the news last week via a Facebook post.

It read: "We would like to inform all our loyal customer that from today we have taken a step back to semi retire. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers for supporting our family business over the past 33 years.

"Many of you might remember when my mother Lidia and step father Domenico opening the cafe back in 1988. They both put their heart and souls into building up a family business and in 1993 Massimo and I took over the business. We have had so many amazing memories throughout the years and it will be hard taking a step back but we are excited to see what the future has in store for us!

"We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for all your loyal business throughout the years especially supporting us throughout lockdown- we are forever grateful. We hope you continue to support the Pelican Cafe and the new family that have taken over. We wish them every success in their new business.

"It has been our absolute pleasure to serve the community throughout the years and thank you for making us feel so welcome.

"Our love and best wishes, Lidia, Massimo, Giovanna xxx."

Locals responded in their droves to wish the family a happy semi-retirement, with one writing: "Happy retirement guys best wee cafe in east end. Good luck in your new venture."

Another wrote: "Happy retirement guys, you'll be solely missed."

In bocca al luppo guys!
