Owners 'heartbroken' as four horses die in 'horrific' A9 crash and two men rushed to hospital

The owners of horses which died in a tragic crash on the A9 yesterday have said their 'world has been turned upside down' by the heartbreaking loss.

Emergency services raced to a crash involving two lorries on the A9 at Cairnie Braes, near Perth, around 2.45pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Two men from one of the lorries have been rushed to hospital for treatment while four horses being carried in the other lorry all died.

Three of the horses belonged to Sophie Hulme with the fourth belonging to Nick Gauntlett who was travelling with the animals to an equestrian event in Blair Atholl.

Both owners have said they are absolutely heartbroken by the horrific loss and are grateful for the support they have received.

Ms Hulme said: "I was not with them, I was already at Blair about to get the stables ready... I am so absolutely devastated and at a loss for words.

"Three of my lovely horses my precious babies are gone.

"Taken far too soon from this world. My beautiful Charisma and Feyre are gone and my lovely Fintan as well. I’m so sorry for Nick and Amanda and for their loss.

"The world can be such a cruel place. My world is completely upside down at the moment."

Mr Gauntlett added: "My amazing family are fine and that is definitely the main thing, but today we lost Party Trick and 3 of Sophie Hulme’s horses.

"Having broken down just 30mins from Land Rover Blair Castle International Horse Trials we sat on the grass verge and watched a lorry plough into our truck.

"You don’t need the details but we lost all four horses on board.

"We are obviously all heart broken. Lucy Morgan and Asha Riches-Wood, the emergency services, vets and people generally were amazing.

"Thank you everyone for your words of support and offers of help. The Eventing world yet again proving what at an amazing family it is. Nick and Amanda."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.45pm on Tuesday, 24 August, officers were called to a report of a road crash involving two lorries on the A9 at Cairnie Braes, near Perth.

"Police, Fire and Ambulance attended and two men from one of the lorries were taken by Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

"One of the lorries was carrying four horses. We can confirm that two of the horses died and two had to be euthanised by vets.

"The road was closed until around 9.30pm."
