Owner warns of common 'toxic bomb' plant that left her dogs with agonising burns

There are the obvious dangers to our pets, like busy roads, but most would not suspect a field of crops.

An owner has warned other pet owners about the dangers of Rapeseed after her dogs were left with agonising burns to their face and ears when they came into contact with the "toxic bomb" crop.

Marnie O'Hare said: "For anyone who is not aware, Rapeseed (the yellow flowering crops in fields) can cause burns to animals.

"The photos are of my two hounds who were both burned."

Canola, or rape, is one of the world's most common crop plants but unbeknown to many it contains toxic substances, or "toxic bombs", that can be activated and let off as a defence mechanism.

Science Daily explains that the substance released burns "like hot mustard", which will shock the animals or insects into moving away from the plant.

Commenting on the post, another wrote that her dog had suffered breathing difficulties after coming into contact with the crop, while others said they "had no idea".

Elsewhere, other owners suggested that the fields may have been sprayed with pesticides, while one added that their dog often runs in Rapeseed fields and has "never experienced any ill effects".
