Owner upset as Nottingham takeaway forced to close over 500 percent energy increase

A Chinese takeaway in business for more than 20 years is being forced to close following a 500% increase in energy prices. The Golden Ocean in Sneinton, which has been serving customers since 2000, says it can no longer continue to operate after being hit with a £6,000 energy bill at the start of November.

Yet Cheng, who owns the takeaway in Carlton Road, says they are "upset" by the decision they have had to make. Staff will now have to go out and find new jobs once the store closes for good.

It was announced on Facebook that Golden Dragon would be serving customers for the last time on December 24, but Yet is unsure if they will even make it to that date ahead of the huge bill they are being faced with next month. Yet says government intervention is the only thing that could keep the takeaway alive.

The takeaway used to be charged around 32p per unit. They are now being charged £1.52. Yet said: "It's now £6,000 a month - we can't afford it. The bills have gone up by 500%.

"At the moment I think it's 32p a unit, but in November time it will be £1.52 a unit. I'm really upset about having to move - we have been here since 2000. When we close now we need to find jobs, because the takeaway is not ours, it's leased.

"Unless the government help with getting the electric price down, we're going to have to permanently close.

"I hope we can get to the 24th of December but it will be £6,000 more starting from November but I hope we can manage until December."

The store was recently named fifth in Just Eat's top five Nottingham takeaways.
