Owner struggled to walk dog out in public so started her own adventure park

A new dog adventure park is already proving popular with dogs and owners alike, especially for pets who struggle in public places.

‘Zoomies Zone’ in Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Anglesey includes a wooded area providing shelter, a sensory garden and obstacles within a fully enclosed field with six foot fences.

It was set up by Anne McKenna inspired by her own rescue dog who she can’t let off a lead in public places.

Anne has four rescued Labradors and one of them, rescued from Cyprus, can be reactive and nervous around other dogs.

She said: “It can be quite stressful because I can’t let him off the lead in public places so here I know he’s safe.

“It’s a common problem, whether it be in rescues of dogs who haven’t been socialised, a big problem after Covid.”

The park, which opened in August was initially under permitted development rights meaning planning can be approved retrospectively.

Having quickly and happily acted on any requests from the council like planting trees, adding woodland and changing access, Anne is hopeful the planning will be accepted.

She said: “I posted on my Facebook, would anyone mind giving some positive feedback and my planning consultant said the council are overwhelmed.

“She said this is probably the most commented on planning application they’ve ever had, from a positive perspective.”

Once the planning is accepted, Anne hopes to begin breed meet ups which would mean specific hours for Staffies, for example.

She posted the idea on several north Wales Facebook groups and had an overwhelming response including people asking for completely obscure breed meetups - making Anne think she might opt for ‘large breeds’ and ‘small breeds’ rather than specific breeds.

The adventure park has also hosted several events in its short time open, including mantrailing once a month.

Mantrailing is a sport where a dog is on a lead and has to find a human. The team at Mantrailers Canines Cymru book the park once a month, and this month they even held a Halloween themed event.

Zoomies Zone also hosts dog birthday parties, where Anne can provide treats, a cake and a pet photographer and it is up to the family of the dog what else to do.

Anne explained: “It's very much that we’re not there to manage it, it is literally you rent the fields for a few hours and it's up to them what they do.”

Happy customers have posted reviews to Zoomies Zone's Facebook page.

One said: "We had a great time yesterday and there was lots in there to keep us occupied.

"Having an overly reactive dog it's rare we can be outdoors and truly relax so this was a much welcomed change."

Another added, "Brilliant place! My rescue German Shepherd loved it!"
