A company behind some of Edinburgh's pubs and restaurants have announced that they are set to slash a whopping 1300 jobs across their businesses due to the impact on their revenue to the coronavirus pandemic.
Hospitality giant Mitchells and Butlers, who own the likes of Nicolson's, Miller and Carter, the capital's historic Sheep Heid Inn, Toby Carvery and All Bar One, had announced earlier this month that they were facing pub and restaurant closures but hadn't outlined how severe the cuts would be.
They informed investors that: "Despite our best efforts to protect as many jobs as we can, we have had to make circa 1,300 redundancies following the end of the financial period.
"The reduced levels of activity and closure of a small number of our sites meant that we could no longer support these roles".
The hospitality group are just one of many who have faced venue closures and redundancies during the coronavirus pandemic, stating that their total sales since the end of September have dropped by 50.8 per cent.
Currently restaurants and bars in Edinburgh are not able to serve alcohol outwith a takeaway basis, while in England where the group also operates venues, their trade was heavily impacted by the previous 10pm curfew.
The firm said: "The future will remain both challenging and highly uncertain with the duration and depth of the trading restrictions imposed on the hospitality sector in response to the Covid-19 pandemic being, in the first instance, the primary determinant of our financial performance ".
The company have not yet announced which venues will shut down for good.
