Owner of Bristol Rovers' League One rivals says clubs will need £400,000 loans to cover coronavirus postponements

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony says the average League One club will need around £300,000 to £400,000 to cover shortfalls caused by the decision to postpone matches in the EFL.

The EFL yesterday called a temporary halt to the season in a bid to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, which saw matches until April 3 postponed.

For Bristol Rovers, that means the Gas will not have a game until a trip to Oxford United on April 10.

Whilst MacAnthony felt it was a right call to postpone matches, he says there will be a huge off-the-field impact on clubs as they try to pay wages without any matchday income, and feels that football needs to come together for a solution.

He told Talksport: "There's definitely going to be cause for concern, putting the health aspect aside.

"You run businesses, from a financial perspective we're losing two home games in the next three weeks from our cash flow.

"We're selling season tickets right now for next season.

"The games will eventually be played and hopefully we'll convene in April and May to finish the season but there is going to be financial shortfalls for many clubs and cashflow issues.

"The way I look at it is each club in League One, League Two and lower down - I don't know how much the Championship will need - I would guesstimate the average League One and League Two club will probably need a loan of £300,000 to £400,000 each.

"There's enough money in football where loans have to be made and you can pay it back over a two to three year period just to get through this process.

"It's definitely going to affect clubs, there's going to be wage bills that will be tough to pay and there's going to be some that aren't fortunate enough to keep going.

"So we need to come together and come up with some policies on this to make sure that nobody goes under due to the virus."

Peterborough United have two players in self-isolation after showing symptoms for the virus, and MacAnthony admitted it left the club in a frustrating position due to the fact the players have not been tested.

"I think it's the right call by the EFL and the Premier League," he said.

"Let's reconvene in three weeks and see what the experts say.

"The testing process definitely needs to be quickened up - I've been speaking to my manager about it, we've got two players in isolation and, with no football for three weeks, do we have an isolation period at the club? Do we bring them all back in next week?

"We need to have the two players tested as we don't want it to spread at the training ground.

"The two players have been told to call a number, they've then been told to isolate themselves for seven days.

"That's fine, but if we don't know if they have it or not, so we've been ringing the private medical providers and insurance.

"Some clubs in the Premier League have got all of their players tested, so if we need to pay to get that done, that's what we'll do.

"It's really confusing and frustrating."
