Owner of Bristol City's Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday could be banned from football over stadium sale

The owner of Sheffield Wednesday could be banned from football over the sale of the Hillsborough stadium.

Bristol City's Championship rivals have already been charged with misconduct over the sale of the stadium, and now similar charges have been brought against owner Dejphon Chansiri, former chief executive Katrien Meire and finance director John Redgate.

The Daily Telegraph revealed last night that all three could be banned from football if found guilty of the charge by an independent panel.

Hillsborough was sold to Chansiri for £60million, allegedly to avoid breaking the EFL's new profitability and sustainability rules.

Chansiri took over as Wednesday boss in 2015 and agreed the sale controversially to help record a pre-tax profit of £2.5 million in the 2017-18 accounts, says the Telegraph.

Land Registry documents revealed the stadium’s sale appeared to be completed the following year and the EFL subsequently charged the club with misconduct following a lengthy investigation.

The new rules state that Championship clubs are only allowed to lose a maximum of £39million over a three year period.

Sheffield Wednesday was charged with misconduct in November over how and when it sold the stadium to Chansiri.

Chansiri, Meire and Redgate are all thought to have been notified of their charges on November 14.

The Telegraph reports that Wednesday declined to comment on the charges.
