Homeowners in Indore, widely known as India's cleanest city, now have an opportunity to reduce their property tax bills while contributing to water conservation. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav has announced a 10% property tax rebate for buildings equipped with functional rainwater harvesting systems. However, residents will need to meet specific inspection and certification requirements to qualify for the benefit, reports The Times of India.

How Indore residents can claim the 10% property tax rebate
The incentive is aimed at encouraging wider adoption of rainwater harvesting systems across the city and boosting groundwater recharge.
To avail the rebate, property owners must:
- Install a functional rainwater harvesting system on their premises.
- Get the system inspected and tested by the Indore Municipal Corporation.
- Obtain certification from designated municipal building officers or inspectors.
Only properties that successfully complete the verification process will be eligible for the 10% reduction in property tax.

The rebate comes with a condition
The tax benefit is not a one-time approval. Municipal authorities have clarified that the rainwater harvesting system must remain operational.
If future inspections find that a previously certified system has stopped functioning or has been removed, the property tax rebate will automatically be withdrawn from the next financial year. This means homeowners must ensure regular maintenance of their rainwater harvesting infrastructure to continue receiving the concession.
Why is the city offering the incentive?
The move is part of Indore's broader push towards sustainable urban development and water conservation. Rainwater harvesting helps collect and channel rainwater back into the ground, improving groundwater levels and reducing dependence on external water sources.
With growing urbanisation and increasing pressure on water resources, civic authorities believe financial incentives can encourage more residents to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
A win-win for homeowners and the environment
The new initiative offers a practical way for Indore residents to lower their property tax while supporting groundwater conservation. For homeowners willing to invest in rainwater harvesting, the policy delivers both financial savings and environmental benefits—further strengthening the city's reputation as a leader in urban sustainability.
