Owen Hargreaves tells Manchester United to copy Liverpool FC in transfer market

Owen Hargreaves believes Manchester United need to copy Liverpool's transfer strategy by signing world-class players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to become genuine title contenders.

United twice led against Leicester on Boxing Day but shared the points after Harvey Barnes' first-half strike and an own goal from Axel Tuanzebe in the last ten minutes.

Bruno Fernandes once again scooped the man of the match award after assisting Marcus Rashford before finding the back of the net himself after the interval, continuing his excellent record since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January.

His display against Leicester saw him break a Premier League record previously held by Frank Lampard, becoming the midfielder with the most goal contributions (31) in a calendar year.

Hargreaves believes United must target players who can add that level of quality like Liverpool did when signing both Van Dijk and Alisson.

"Incredible," he told Premier League Productions of Fernandes' record. "It's absolutely unbelievable numbers.

"That's one player - look at the impact it's made.

"If they could get one or two more of those types of players. Liverpool did it with Alisson and Van Dijk.

"It's not quantity, it's quality. Bruno has been nothing but quality since he's arrived.

"He's the best player in the Premier League right now."

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood echoed Hargreaves' assessment and stressed the importance of Fernandes to this current United team.

He added: "He's so effective. He turns over the ball a lot. He makes them play.

"He's progressive, looks to run forward, makes runs off the ball, scores goals and makes assist.

"The whole Manchester United team comes alive when he takes possession of the ball."
