Owen Hargreaves reveals what Sir Alex Ferguson told him when signing for Manchester United

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson told him he'd been signed to help the club win the Champions League.

Hargreaves arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2007, having already won the top European trophy during his time with Bayern Munich.

And speaking to BT Sport as part of their 'What I Wore' series, Hargreaves lifted the lid on his conversation with Ferguson when the move was made.

"It was so hard," Hargreaves said on leaving Bayern, who he'd been with since 1997 after growing up in Canada.

"A lot of teams came in for me, pretty much everyone.

"I was only ever leaving Bayern Munich for Man United and I remember Sir Alex said to me 'one of the reasons I signed you, is to help us win the Champions League, I think you can help us do that'.

"And I said 'that's why I'm here boss'."

Hargreaves went on to play a key role that season, playing all 120 minutes of the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea and scoring a penalty to help United win via the shootout in Moscow. That would remain the only full season he played at United, as he then suffered from major injury problems.

He revealed he felt more confident, having won the 2001 Champions League with Bayern and having been part of the United team that won the 2007/08 Premier League that same season.

"It was different that time around," Hargreaves added.

"It was my second Champions League final and I was 27, that's what I'd signed for. First time [with Bayern] I was just a joker in the pack, but that one we were ready.

"I remember the songs that were playing in the dressing room, we were so focused and we had a brilliant manager."
