Owen Hargreaves on 'good will' that will afford Marcelo Bielsa time to fix Leeds United problems

Marcelo Bielsa suffered the heaviest defeat of his managerial career as his Leeds side lost 7-0 to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

It was a brutal game for the Whites as City ruthlessly exposed Leeds' man-marking system and ran riot at the Etihad.

On BT Sport, Joleon Lescott and Owen Hargreaves were scathing in their criticism of Bielsa's tactics but Hargreaves was clear that although much of the blame for the performance was laid at Bielsa's door, he has achieved so much at Elland Road and deserves time to fix the problems:

"It is a big blow but I think the good will is rightly there because he’s done an incredible job," said Hargreaves.

He went on to say that injuries had been a huge part of the problem in Leeds' poor form this season, saying:

" I just think they have too many injuries. Obviously Bamford, Phillips but more importantly defensively, all the goals they conceded, missing virtually all the centre-backs.

"They have too many injuries to overcome when City play that well and that clinical then you’re going to get smashed up which is exactly what happened."

Lescott hard earlier been clear that the set-up had badly hurt the Whites on the night, with City managing to expose Leeds' defenders in 1v1 situations far too often as City seemed to score at will in regular intervals throughout the match.

"It’s exciting to watch but it can’t be enjoyable to take part in. As a defender, players are isolated and they weren’t giving each other cover.

"For me, that’s in the setup, that’s not the individuals. I can’t fault anyone’s application, I thought all the players gave 100% effort but the setup was damning for them."
