Owen Hargreaves has insisted Frank Lampard is yet to develop the key spine to his Chelsea side despite the additions of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech.
The Blues have been active in the transfer market already this summer, with a deal for Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell next on the agenda.
However, after poor defensive displays, this season further highlighted against Arsenal in the FA Cup, fans and members of the media have questioned whether a centre-back must be added too.
Lampard has shifted to a back three on multiple occasions this season to protect his defenders but with a solid partnership yet to materialise, it's a position the club could strengthen this summer.
Hargreaves believes that Chelsea are looking for a breakout star in the mould of Terry to lead the defence and insists Lampard is yet to establish a clear spine to his team.
“Timo Werner is a fabulous player, and I love Ziyech off the right-hand side," Hargreaves told BT Sport.
"When I think back to those great Chelsea teams - Cech in goal, John Terry, Makelele, Drogba - the spine. Frank doesn’t have that yet. He’s got great ball-players.
"He’s going to get even better ones. But when I think back to the leaders he had, those United teams we had, I don’t think they’re there.
"He might spend a lot of money on these really good players, but Frank probably wants to see players emerge, a bit like JT, a bit like him.
"That’s going to be difficult - I think they need that, United need that, Arsenal need that."
He added: “Frank needs someone to come in and grab that defence like John Terry did, and marshall it. It shows you, there’s not enough communication.
“Koulibaly (Chelsea should sign). He needs a leader back there. Koulibaly is that type, they need someone in there to come and command it.”
