Circo Teatro Udi Grudi had a big hit at the festival back in 2001 with O Cano, but I fear these Brazilian clowns won't be winning any awards this time round.
This three-hander about a trio of overgrown Stigs of the Dump, who turn their rubbish existence into something life-enhancing, eventually achieves a certain cracked pathos. But it is a long time coming. The first 20 minutes of this 50-minute show are all whimsical self-indulgence as the trio give each other sticky tape moustaches and penises and clown around in a low-key way, mumbling to themselves.
After this awkward start things pick up as they create a menagerie of animals out of old cans, plastic bottles and the detritus of modern urban living. These junk puppets double as both man's best friends and musical instruments. The best sequence concerns a delightful plastic-bottle dog that is given its own funeral march and pyre.
The old magic of this company sometimes shines through, as with the ghostly floating figure conjured out of discarded plastic bags. But although I suspect this show aims to make you laugh and cry, it is far too flabby to make me do either.
