'Overworked' doctors and nurses 'not to blame' for mum left lying on A&E floor

"Overworked" doctors and nurses are "not to blame" after a woman was left lying on the floor in A&E, according to readers.

Hundreds of people have come out in support of NHS staff who were working the night that mum, Jodie Lee, went to the Royal Hospital after having a seizure.

The 36-year-old was reportedly denied a bed by staff and left fitting on the floor as her condition is neurological and not physical.

Jodie, from Anfield, eventually left the hospital three hours later but was left "traumatised" by the ordeal, despite hospital staff saying she was "cared for appropriately".

Hundreds of ECHO readers posted on social media to share their sympathy with Ms Lee as well as show support for the overstretched NHS and its hardworking staff.

A number of people also moved the blame onto the Conservative government for making miserable cuts to health services.

On Facebook, Tom Walker said: "Shocking story and should never happen in this country.

"If the NHS dont have beds to put her in it's not their fault.

"Don't blame the over worked doctors and nurses, blame the government that's not funding them."

Niall O'Dubhthaigh also said: "Tory cuts are to blame, not the hospital, staff or nurses. They're bent over backwards as it is."

Lee Webster added: "NHS is a free service for us they can’t be 100% the best free service all the time.

"If the government pulled their fingers out a bit more they’d be able to find for more beds an nurses so on."

Jodie suffers from non-epileptic attack disorder (NEAD), a condition that produces seizures, similar to epilepsy, but is thought to be caused by a brain condition she suffers from, known as Functional Neurological Disease (FND).

When she arrived at the hospital in an ambulance at 6pm, she says that while she was fitting she was declared medically fit and told by staff that she would not be offered a bed.

It's claimed that one seizure she experienced while at the hospital caused her to fall to the ground and hit her head on the floor.

She claims that she was convulsing on the floor for more than an hour, and that when her family asked for her to be put in a bed they were repeatedly told she was 'medically fit'.

Jodie says that when members of her family repeatedly asked nurses for a bed for Jodie, while she was fitting, she was told to make do with a chair.

She added: "When I arrived they took me straight through to a quiet room because I was making a lot of noise because I suffer from Tourette's when I'm in one of my seizures.

"I was hitting myself as part of my seizure. It's completely involuntary.

“They left me with no bed knowing full well that I have seizures and I should have been placed on a bed like everyone else deserves a bed in the Royal.

"I think because I had been seen by the crisis mental health team I wasn't technically under A&E and they said I didn't require a bed.

“But then I stood up and had another seizure that caused me to hit my head on the floor.

"After I had the next seizure and hit my head on the floor I needed a bed."

But many people rejected the idea that Jodie was "refused" a bed and again said that it was more likely that they had to prioritise the people in A&E due to bed shortages.

Irene Fortune said: "Refused is harsh the situation was there just wasn't a bed blame this government.

"Nobody should be treated like this, it's the biggest disgrace ever.

"I hope the lady is recovering my heart and best wishes go out to her."

Tomas Bath added: "The NHS is on its knees as a result of 9 years of Tory rule.

"It needs rescuing and fast, people shouldn’t have to suffer like this and NHS staff shouldn’t be put in a situation where they have to prioritise in this way, it’s disgraceful.

"Vote Labour and save the NHS."

Jamie A North also said: "The government need to fund the NHS better that’s the reason these things are happening."
