Overwhelming majority say they will 'change their vote' after devastating council report

The shocking revelations into Liverpool Council's working practices could be felt at the ballot box.

A survey carried out by the ECHO revealed that 69% said they intended to change the way they vote in the upcoming local elections to be held on May 6.

The scathing report, unveiled yesterday by Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick, revealed a "deeply worrying" picture of a council with a "dysfunctional culture of intimidation" and evidence of records being destroyed or thrown away.

As a result, Government commissioners will be sent to the city to intervene in part of the running of the council.

A large majority (89%) agreed with the decision to send independent commissioners.

In answer to 'what finding was most disturbing?', the biggest number (17%) said the findings were all as bad as each other.

But in terms of individual major problems, most people were disturbed by the awarding of contracts (13%), and taxpayers losing out by land being undervalued (12%).

An overwhelming 91% agreed that the report had done "a great deal of damage" to Liverpool's reputation.

There was also a big majority (83%) in favour of changing to an all-out election structure, rather than seats coming up for election every year.

In answer to the question "what was your reaction to the report into Liverpool Council?", 51% responded "I knew it", followed by 20% who were "angry."

The commissioners will intervene in the council's planning, property management, highways and regeneration departments, which have been the subject of a government investigation.

The commissioners will be in place for three years, with an improvement plan also put in place.
