'Overwhelmed' Speedo Mick shares important message with ECHO readers after he hits £100k

Speedo Mick has shared a message with ECHO readers about the 'overwhelming support' he has received after hitting £100k in donations.

Mick Cullen, 55, aka Speedo Mick - set out on his 1000 mile journey back in December, with the aim of raising £50,000 for charity, by walking from John O' Groats to Land's End dressed only in a pair of swimming trunks.

But today the 55-year-old has smashed his original target by reaching £100,000 in donations - something which he says has left him feeling "absolutely estatic."

Mick told the ECHO: "I'm absolutely elated, it's unbelievable.

"I'm overwhelmed with the support I've recieved. I don't think it's sunk in yet to be honest.

"When I put the 50,000 target up on the page I said to my wife Rachael 'is that too much?' but she said just leave it on there.

"I'm absolutely estatic."

The 55-year-old reached Liverpool city centre at around 4pm on Saturday, January 18, seven hours after starting his day 13 miles away in Aughton.

And this morning he appeared on BBC Breakfast , where he had the presenters in stitches with his answers to their questions.

He said: "It was minus five in Scotland, the challenge for me is to not wear any clothes for the whole day - but I'll admit I did have to wear them a couple of times when it was snowing."

Mick said  he loved seeing the shocked faces from cars passing by him and just wanted to project positivity.

He also thanked Everton for their support "from the beginning", but said he was happy that away fans had also supported him and that his efforts "brought out lightheartedness" at football.

Mick is walking from John O'Groats to Lands End to raise £100,000 for the charity he is setting up.

Leave The Light On will run community projects for people, young and old, who feel isolated – and Mick has already raised £95,000 of that target.

He had to halt his walk briefly as he received treatment for his calf injury, but he is now back on the road and keen to complete his challenge.
