Overwhelmed fish and chip shop halts NHS discounts after 'unpleasant' complaints from customers

A fish and chop shop that offered coronavirus discounts to NHS staff has been forced to end the offer following a series of "unpleasant" complaints.

George's Tradition in Derby said it received hundreds of orders from NHS and key emergency service workers every day.

But boss Andrew Constantinou claimed the "overwhelming" demand led to some grumbles from customers because of delays in getting served, reports Derbyshire Live.

He said: "We have received a great deal of positive feedback for which we are extremely grateful, however, due to overwhelming demand it has become increasingly difficult to deal with the hundreds of discount requests that we receive each day.

"This has resulted in a number of small-minded people writing to me making unjustified complaints including some quite unpleasant content."

Mr Constantinou said instead his business would be making a donation of £500 a week to good causes nominated by customers.

He said: "I for one will be eternally grateful to everyone on the front line who is working tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

"But for some time I have been conscious of the unsung heroes who support us in so many different ways and this is why I have decided to replace the NHS discount with a new weekly donation of £500 in cash that will be given to good causes that are nominated by you."
