Overweight dog spent five years without going for a walk as claws curled under paw

An overweight dog who spent five years without going for a walk and saw his claws curl from the lack of exercise is on the road to recovery.

Adorable beagle Leo gain weight and had his claws grow to unnatural lengths after being unable to see the outside world.

Rescuers are now hoping to find his forever home where he can enjoy the sunshine and grass.

The six-year-old dog was taken into one of Hull's main dog rescue centres as staff say he had "had a really tough time".

Leo has been taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue and now enjoys going for walks, HullLive reports.

Staff say he is "making new friends" for the first time.

Staff said: "This poor boy has had a really tough time.

"Leo has spent the last five years inside a home never going on walks or seeing the outside world, he is extremely overweight and he had claws growing into his pads (these are now sorted)."

Images show Leo's overgrown claws and how they are curled in an unnatural way.

This can happen to all dog breeds when they aren't properly exercised and stay sedentary.

The claws were so long that they started digging into his paws, causing Leo discomfort.

Oakwood Rescue added: "Despite living an incredibly sheltered life he is the sweetest boy, he has taken coming to us in his stride and is enjoying meeting new people and venturing out on little walks – he’s even made a few dog friends!

"Leo has started his weight loss journey and hopefully he will steal someone's heart soon."

Last month, we reported how A dog that was found with "faeces-matted fur" is now unrecognisable after finding him forever home.

Little Milo, a Shih Tzu, was so poorly that rescue workers struggled to distinguish between his head and rear because of the state of his fur.

He was found in January last year in a small pen in Ireland.

His cage was so small he had no choice but to live among his mess which caused his poo to get clumped into his fur.
