Overturned trailer causes hour delay on M4 near Bristol

An overturned lorry is causing huge delays to commuters and holidaymakers heading from Bristol into Wales.

The lorry rolled over at around 7am this morning (Friday, July 23), and immediately blocked two lanes of the westbound M4, just as the motorway reached the Welsh side of the Prince of Wales Bridge.

Traffic had to be stopped for a short time by emergency services to clear debris from the road, but recovery is still in progress, as of 9am, and two lanes are blocked.

The queues began to build straight away, and two hours later, it was reportedly taking motorists an hour to travel from junction 22 to 23 of the M4, the last junction in England with the M49 from Avonmouth to the first junction on the Welsh side of the estuary.

There were delays on the eastbound side too, as motorists slowed down to look at the scene, and other issues as motorists took an alternative route across the old Severn Bridge.

The incident happened at the start of what is forecast to be the busiest day on the roads of the West Country region this year - as the great holiday getaway adds to the regular Friday traffic.
