Overturned lorry closes M61 slip road over night following a crash

A slip road on the M61 was closed over night after a HGV crashed and ended up on its side.

The lorry, belonging to Lancashire-based haulage company HPH, crashed shortly before 8pm last night (Monday May 25) according to Highways England.

It happened at the northbound entry slip road at junction six ( Horwich /Chorley), close to the University of Bolton Stadium and Middlebrook Retail Park.

The lorry shed its load and left a mountain of boxes in the M61 (Highways England)

At 7.51pm, Highways England tweeted: "The M61 northbound entry slip road at J6 is currently closed due to a collision. Traffic officers and maintenance crews are currently at scene. Recovery are on their way to the area to assist."

During the recovery, which was carried out by Hough Green Garage, the lorry's load spilled into the slip road. Highways England shared a photo of a mountain of boxes in the road at 11.31pm.

A spokesman added: "Overturned HGV is currently being recovered. The slip will remain closed due to the spillage of its load."

It was not until after 5.30am this morning (Tuesday May 26) that Highways England and the North West Motorway Police confirmed on social media that the road was reopen.

The driver of the lorry is not believed to be injured.

Manchester Evening News has contacted HPH and Hough Green Garage for comment.
