Overturned boat sparks massive rescue operation in Kilmarnock as emergency services called to river

An overturned boat on an Ayrshire river sparked a massive emergency services response in Kilmarnock last night.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were called to the scene, near New Mill Road, after the alarm was raised at around 6.40pm.

Special water rescue teams from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service swiftly recovered the stricken boat from the River Irvine.

Police Scotland has now confirmed that no one was found in the water nearby.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Around 6.40pm on Wednesday, 9 June, 2021, police received a report of an overturned boat on the River Irvine in Kilmarnock.

“Emergency services attended, the boat was recovered and no-one was traced.”

The SFRS, who mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene, left the area at around 8.47pm after completing their search.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service added: "We received a call at 1923 hours yesterday to attend an incident in Kilmarnock. We dispatched two ambulances and our special operations team to the scene."
